I took the original route and added in a few modification to get the walk up to 10 miles, and this then added more ascent, but the 14 who joined me for the day all survived the experience and had a nice day out, or so they told me anyway! We left the Sett Valley trail in Hayfield and followed the River Kinder for a time before climbing via Stones House to reach Mount Famine where it was a trifle windy but, where we had some spectacular views to South Head and across towards Kinder Downfall. I then offered an optional ascent of South Head but had no takers, and so we contoured around and descended to Beet Farm and eventually Dewsnaps. Another short climb followed before we descended and to crossed the A624 to reach the valley floor. Lunch was then taken, much to the relief of my “customers”, who were perhaps wondering if I had actually forgotten all about it. Two more climbs followed after lunch but the party were now refreshed and full of new-found vigour and everyone coped well with the elevation gains. The last higher level views gave a rich reward and a chance to linger for a time before finally, after descending to Birch Vale, we returned to the waiting cars along the Sett Valley Trail where we all “signed off”, said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.

The Group on Mount Famine

Although I have not posted for quite some time I have still been out and about in the hills on a regular basis and this, my latest excursion, saw me […]

[5
