Keeping my walking within the Greater Manchester Boundary due to the Covid-19 restrictions, and not having walked from Carrbrook for quite some time, I planned this excursion with a view to ticking all the relevant restriction boxes whist at the same time having a good day in the boots. My good lady and I were blessed with a clear and bright day for the walk and left the transport at Carrbrook in good spirits. The route climbs straight from the car park all the way to the summit of Alphin pike, but it is a gradual ascent with plenty of wide open space and good scenery to keep the interest. We reached the summit without incident and paused for coffee, and also to admire more excellent views, and some warm sunshine, which was very pleasant and most welcome. Suitably refreshed we continued on our way, travelling generally east, along the at times iced up edge paths, to eventually reach Chew Reservoir. The access road was then used for the descent from the higher ground, but lunch was taken early in the descent at the disused quarry below the Dish Stone, before we continued down to reach Charnel Clough and the Oldham Way. The return leg of the walk was now at a lower level, travelling west and then south, and was quite a contrast to the outward leg, but no less enjoyable, providing different scenery to admire. We reached our transport in good time, having enjoyed another fine day in the hills which provided us with good weather, some fine upland scenery, fresh air and exercise. Perfect.
